This 8 day Morocco itinerary starts and ends in Marrakech and loops over the High Atlas to the Sahara: one night in the Dades Valley, two nights at a desert camp in Merzouga, one night in Ouarzazate and three nights in Marrakech. It is the route we recommend when you have one week, because it fits the mountains, the desert and a real city without rushing any of them.
What it leaves out is the north. Fes, Meknes, Volubilis and Chefchaouen need more days, so if those matter to you, look at our 10 day Morocco itinerary or read how many days you need in Morocco first.

Day by Day: 7 Nights From Marrakech to the Sahara
Day 1. Arrival in Marrakech
Your driver meets you at Marrakech airport and takes you to your riad in or near the medina. Most flights land in the afternoon, so we keep this evening free: a first walk to Jemaa el Fna square as the food stalls light up, then dinner at your own pace. Day 2. Marrakech to the Dades Valley
The road climbs into the High Atlas and crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at about 2,260 meters, with Amazigh villages built into the slopes. On the far side, you pass Ouarzazate and the palm groves and old kasbahs of Skoura, then follow the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley. Dinner is at your hotel.
Day 3. Dades Valley to the Sahara via the Todra Gorge
In the morning you walk into the Todra Gorge, where the rock walls rise straight up from a shallow river. From there it is about four and a half hours of driving before stops to Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. You ride a camel into the dunes for sunset and reach your camp for dinner under the stars.
Day 4. A Full Day in the Sahara
This is the day that makes the second desert night worth it. You wake up for sunrise over the dunes, then spend the day around the erg: a 4×4 loop of the dunes, the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia village, and time to rest at camp in the heat of the day. Quad biking is an optional extra, at about $60 per person per hour, paid on site to a local agency. You spend a second night at the camp, with dinner included. Day 5. Merzouga to Ouarzazate
You leave the dunes for the Rissani market, then cross the Saghro mountains to N’Kob for lunch, a village of earthen kasbahs. The road then follows the Draa Valley and its palm groves to Ouarzazate, where dinner is included.
Day 6. Ouarzazate to Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou
The morning stop is Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified village that appears in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. The climb to the top is optional: you can walk the foot of the village and take photos from there. Then you cross the High Atlas again and reach Marrakech by late afternoon.
Day 7. Marrakech Guided Tour
A local guide takes you through the medina: the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the souks, with stops at artisan workshops. Majorelle Garden is not included in the tour, so book your ticket online ahead of time. The evening is yours for a hammam, a rooftop dinner or a last walk through the square.
Day 8. Departure
After breakfast, your driver takes you to Marrakech airport for your flight home.
How Much Does an 8 Day Morocco Trip Cost?
An 8 day private tour costs less than our 10 day route, and we price it route by route because three things move the number most: your hotel level, your travel month and the size of your group.
- Hotel level. Standard 3*, Affordable Lux 4* or Deluxe 5*. The desert camp changes with it.
- Season. March to May and September to November are the busiest months, and hotel rates rise with demand. January, February and June to August cost less.
- Group size. Prices assume two people sharing. Solo travelers pay more per person because nothing is shared, including the room.
The price includes your private vehicle and driver, your guide, your hotels and camp, daily breakfast, dinners in the Dades Valley, at the Sahara camp and in Ouarzazate, the camel trek and the Marrakech guided tour. It does not include international flights, tips, travel insurance, lunches, Majorelle Garden or quad biking. Best Time to Do This Route
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best months for this loop, with warm days in the desert and comfortable walking weather in Marrakech. They are also the busiest, so book early if you want a specific riad.
Winter works well and costs less, but desert nights get cold and snow can close the Tichka pass for a few hours, so pack warm layers. If you want the north and the desert in the same week, choose a north to south route; if you can add two or three days, the 10 day loop gives you both without the rush.

8 Day Morocco Itinerary FAQ
Yes, for one region. Eight days covers Marrakech, the High Atlas, the Dades Valley and two nights in the Sahara at a comfortable pace. To add Fes, Meknes, Volubilis and Chefchaouen, plan on 10 days.
You can, on a north to south route, but you spend more time in the car and fewer nights in each place. If Fes matters to you, the 10 day itinerary is the better fit.
One night means you arrive at sunset and leave after sunrise. The second night gives you a full day in the dunes without a long drive, plus a sunrise and a sunset over the dunes.
We do not recommend it. Marrakech to Merzouga is about 10 hours of mountain driving, with a lot to see on the way. Breaking it with nights in the Dades Valley and Ouarzazate makes the drive part of the trip.
Yes. Casablanca is about two and a half hours from Marrakech by highway, so the route works from either city. You fly in and out of the same city.
