Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate: A Visitor’s Guide

Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified earthen village, or ksar, on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, and one of the most photographed places in Morocco. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, it has appeared in films from Lawrence of Arabia to Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Most travelers spend one to two hours exploring it on the road between Marrakech and the desert, and the nearby city of Ouarzazate adds film studios and a grand kasbah.

Ait Ben Haddou ksar, Morocco

Ait Ben Haddou sits on almost every route between Marrakech and the Sahara. Here is what to see, how long to stay, and how to fit it into your trip.

What Is Ait Ben Haddou?

The ksar is a cluster of earthen houses, towers and kasbahs built on a hillside above the Ounila river, inside defensive walls. For centuries it was a stop for caravans carrying goods across the Atlas Mountains. Today only a few families still live inside the old walls; most moved to the newer village across the river, and the lanes are lined with small shops, cafes and artists’ studios.

Things to Do in Ait Ben Haddou

1. Walk the Ksar

Cross the river on the footbridge and climb the narrow lanes between the earthen houses. The village is small, so you can see it all in an hour or two at an easy pace.

2. Climb to the Old Granary

At the top of the hill, the ruined granary has the best view over the ksar, the river and the desert plains. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light turns the walls gold and the heat is gentler.

3. Spot the Film Locations

Ait Ben Haddou has been a film set for decades, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy and Game of Thrones. Local guides are happy to point out the scenes.

4. Meet Local Artists

Some studios in the ksar show a traditional painting technique using saffron, tea and indigo, where the image appears when the paper is warmed over a flame. It makes a light, easy souvenir to carry home.

5. Stay for Sunset or Sunrise

Spending a night nearby lets you see the ksar empty and glowing at sunset, and again at sunrise, before the day visitors arrive.

Ouarzazate: The Door of the Desert

Ouarzazate, Morocco

Ouarzazate, a short drive from Ait Ben Haddou, is the main town of the region and a base for film production. Visit one of the large film studios to walk through sets used in Hollywood productions, see the Taourirt Kasbah, once a stronghold of the powerful Glaoui family, and stop at the small Museum of Cinema. Many routes from the Sahara to Marrakech spend a night in or near Ouarzazate.

How to Get to Ait Ben Haddou

From Marrakech, the road crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at about 2,260 meters one of the highest road passes in Morocco, with views over Berber villages and terraced valleys. A scenic alternative leaves the main road to follow the Ounila valley past the Kasbah of Telouet.

Most of our routes reach Ait Ben Haddou on the last day of the journey from the Sahara to Marrakech, after the Dades Valley and Ouarzazate. On trips that start in Marrakech, it is the first stop on the way to the desert, and we never do the Sahara and back in a rush.
