Ait Ben Haddou sits on almost every route between Marrakech and the Sahara. Here is what to see, how long to stay, and how to fit it into your trip.
The ksar is a cluster of earthen houses, towers and kasbahs built on a hillside above the Ounila river, inside defensive walls. For centuries it was a stop for caravans carrying goods across the Atlas Mountains. Today only a few families still live inside the old walls; most moved to the newer village across the river, and the lanes are lined with small shops, cafes and artists’ studios.
Cross the river on the footbridge and climb the narrow lanes between the earthen houses. The village is small, so you can see it all in an hour or two at an easy pace.
At the top of the hill, the ruined granary has the best view over the ksar, the river and the desert plains. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light turns the walls gold and the heat is gentler.
Ait Ben Haddou has been a film set for decades, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy and Game of Thrones. Local guides are happy to point out the scenes.
Some studios in the ksar show a traditional painting technique using saffron, tea and indigo, where the image appears when the paper is warmed over a flame. It makes a light, easy souvenir to carry home.
Spending a night nearby lets you see the ksar empty and glowing at sunset, and again at sunrise, before the day visitors arrive.

Ouarzazate, a short drive from Ait Ben Haddou, is the main town of the region and a base for film production. Visit one of the large film studios to walk through sets used in Hollywood productions, see the Taourirt Kasbah, once a stronghold of the powerful Glaoui family, and stop at the small Museum of Cinema. Many routes from the Sahara to Marrakech spend a night in or near Ouarzazate.
Staying the night lets you see the ksar at sunset and sunrise. The first six stays are in Ait Ben Haddou, with views of the ksar, and the last four are in Ouarzazate, a short drive away. All are ranked by Booking.com guest scores and reviews, checked in October 2026.
