Sahara Desert Camp in Morocco: What to Expect at Merzouga

Sahara-desert-camp-in-morocco

A night in a Sahara desert camp at Merzouga is the most memorable part of many Morocco trips. You ride a camel into the dunes at sunset, eat dinner under the stars, and wake up to sunrise over the sand.

This guide explains what a desert camp night is really like, what comfort to expect, how to get there and how many nights to stay, so you can plan with confidence.

A night in a Sahara camp, step by step

  1. Late afternoon: Arrive in Merzouga and meet your camel guides at the edge of the dunes.
  2. Sunset camel trek: Ride into the dunes at a gentle pace. The camel trek is included in a Simply Morocco private tour.
  3. Arrival at camp: Settle into your tent and watch the light change on the sand.
  4. Dinner: A traditional Moroccan dinner is served at the camp and is included on the tour.
  5. Evening: Music around the fire, then stargazing. Far from city lights, the night sky is one of the highlights.
  6. Sunrise: Climb a nearby dune for first light, then have breakfast before heading out.

Camp comfort: what your tent will be like

Desert camps range from simple to luxurious, and what you get depends on your accommodation level.

LevelWhat to expect
Standard 3*A comfortable desert camp with the full camel trek and dinner experience
Affordable Lux 4*Tents with heating and air conditioning, a private bathroom and a private shower
Deluxe 5*A luxury camp with a higher level of comfort and service

Desert nights can be cooler than expected in the cold season, and daytime can be warm in summer, so tents with heating and air conditioning are a real advantage. If comfort is a priority, choose a higher level or ask for air conditioning in the tent all day.

Getting to Merzouga, and how many nights to stay

Merzouga is the gateway to the Sahara dunes in Morocco, and it is far from the main cities. The journey is part of the trip, and planning it well makes a big difference.

  • From Fes: This is a long driving day. Stops along the way make it easier, and a private driver lets you set the pace.
  • From Marrakech: Break the journey with nights in Dades or Ouarzazate, rather than trying to do it in one go.
  • Leaving Merzouga: Do not plan a direct transfer to Marrakech right after a long arrival day. Breaking it with a night in Ouarzazate keeps the trip comfortable.

One night or two? We recommend two nights in the Sahara. One night fits a shorter itinerary, but two gives you a full evening and morning in the dunes, time to rest after the drive, and no rush on the camel trek or the sunrise. A 9-day trip has one Sahara night, and the 10-day Highlights route has two.
