Taghazout vs Imsouane: Where to Surf in Morocco

Taghazout vs Imsouane: Where to Surf in Morocco

Choose Taghazout if you want many surf spots, surf schools, cafes and a lively village close to Agadir. Choose Imsouane if you want one long, gentle wave, a quiet fishing village and slow days by the ocean. Both sit on Morocco’s Atlantic coast north of Agadir, and both work for beginners.

This guide compares the two villages so you can pick the one that fits your style, or combine both.

Taghazout: The Lively Surf Village

Taghazout is Morocco’s best-known surf village, and it is the easier choice if you want options.

  • Waves for every level: beginner-friendly beaches nearby, plus well-known point breaks such as Anchor Point, Killer Point and Hash Point for experienced surfers
  • Plenty of support: surf schools, board rental, yoga studios and cafes along the seafront
  • Easy access: close to Agadir and its airport, with beaches and hotels nearby. See our guide to Agadir.

Good to know: it gets busy in high season, it feels more commercial than smaller villages, and some breaks depend on the tide.

Imsouane: The Quiet Bay

Imsouane is a small fishing village built around a sheltered bay, and its long right-hand wave is one of the best known in Morocco.

  • A long, gentle ride: the bay suits beginners and longboarders who want time on the wave
  • A slower pace: fishing boats, cliffs and sunsets, with few distractions
  • Real village life: fresh fish from the harbor and a relaxed, local feel

Good to know: it is more remote, with fewer restaurants and little nightlife, so it suits travelers who want to unplug.

When to Surf in Morocco

The Atlantic swells are most consistent from autumn to spring, when experienced surfers come for the point breaks. Summer brings smaller waves, which suits beginners, and warmer weather on the beach. See the best time to visit Morocco for the weather month by month.

Adding the Coast to a Morocco Trip

Most travelers come for the cities and the Sahara first, and add the coast at the end. Our 14 day itinerary already finishes on the Atlantic in Essaouira: see two weeks in Morocco. On a custom private tour, we can extend the trip with nights in Taghazout or Imsouane, with your own driver for the transfers.

Taghazout vs Imsouane FAQ

Is Taghazout or Imsouane better for beginners?

Both work. Imsouane’s bay gives long, gentle rides, and Taghazout has more surf schools and beginner beaches to choose from.

How far is Taghazout from Agadir?

It is a short drive north of the city and its airport, which makes it the easier base for a short stay.

Yes. Many surfers start in Taghazout and finish in Imsouane, then continue up the coast toward Essaouira.

Is there anything to do if I do not surf?

Taghazout has yoga, cafes, beaches and Agadir nearby. Imsouane is better for reading, walking the cliffs and watching the fishing boats come in.
